What colour of polycarbonate is best for a terrace?

What colour of polycarbonate is best for a terrace?

A polycarbonate patio roof is a practical solution that effectively protects the relaxation area from rain, wind gusts, and excessive sunlight, whilst not completely blocking out natural light. Polycarbonate is a lightweight, durable material available in many variants, making it suitable for both modern patio pergolas and simple garden structures attached to residential properties.

Polycarbonate — which side faces outwards? How to install sheets correctly

Polycarbonate — which side faces outwards? How to install sheets correctly

Polycarbonate is one of the most popular materials for building greenhouses, patio canopies, carports, and roof skylights. It is lightweight, durable, and transmits light well — but only when installed correctly. One of the most serious installation errors is laying the sheet with the wrong side facing the sun. This mistake can cause the material to start yellowing, turning opaque, cracking, and losing its properties within just 2–3 years.

What kind of screws should I use for multi-wall polycarbonate?

What kind of screws should I use for multi-wall polycarbonate?

Polycarbonate is lightweight, impact-resistant and easy to process, which is why it is often used for terrace roofs, pergolas, greenhouses, carports, skylights, balcony covers and lightweight partition walls. However, choosing the sheet itself is only part of the work. The durability of the entire structure also depends on the installation method, especially on properly selected screws, washers and profiles.

FAQ
What is multi-wall polycarbonate and what are its main advantages?

Multi-wall polycarbonate is a lightweight and extremely durable building material made of polycarbonate resin, whose unique structure provides excellent thermal insulation. Its main advantages include high impact and weather resistance (from -40°C to +120°C), UV protection, low weight that doesn't burden the structure, and high light transmission of up to 84%.

What should you remember when installing multi-wall polycarbonate?

The panels should be installed with channels facing the direction of water flow, which prevents moisture from accumulating inside the chambers. It's important to maintain expansion gaps, allowing for thermal expansion of the material, and to properly secure the ends of the panels with tape: solid at the top and vapor-permeable at the bottom. The UV-filtering side (marked on the protective film) must always face outward.

How does solid polycarbonate differ from glass?

Solid polycarbonate is a modern, safe alternative to glass, being significantly lighter and much more resistant to breakage. Unlike glass, this material does not crumble upon impact, which increases safety, and its processing (cutting, drilling) is much easier and does not require specialized tools.

What colors and sizes are solid polycarbonate available?

Sources offer sheets in clear, smoked (brown), graphite, and opal (milky). The sheets are available in standard sheets (e.g., 2050x3050 mm), but it is also possible to order cut-to-size sheets.

What are the most common applications of multi-wall panels?

This material is widely used in construction, agriculture, and industry. It is most often used for greenhouses, terrace roofs, carports, skylights, as well as infill for balustrades and partitions.

How do I choose the right panel thickness and color for a terrace roof?

For terrace roofs, 10 mm or 16 mm thick panels are most often recommended, as they provide optimal rigidity. The color choice depends on your needs: clear provides maximum illumination, while smoked (brown), opal (milky), or graphite versions reduce heat gain and protect against glare.

Where is solid polycarbonate best suited?

Thanks to its transparency and enormous mechanical strength (comparable to aluminum), solid polycarbonate is used as a safe infill for windows and doors, acoustic screens, machine guards, and in bus shelters and walkway structures. It is also used for aesthetic terrace roofing, where a glass-like appearance is required.

Is solid polycarbonate resistant to aging from sunlight?

Yes, solid polycarbonate sheets available from sources have a UV protective layer (often double-sided, labeled 2UV), which protects the material from yellowing and loss of mechanical properties. This ensures they maintain their aesthetic appearance and durability for many years, even with constant exposure to sunlight.
